After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he studied from 1948 to 1954 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was a master student of Josef Henselmann. After completing his studies he worked as a freelance sculptor in Munich. From 1961 he took part in the Great Art Exhibition in the Haus der Kunst in Munich. From 1970 his main activity was the creation of pictorial objects. From 1971 he was a member of the German Artists' Association, having already taken part in its 18th major group exhibition in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn the year before. From 1972 Bindl was a member of the New Group . In 1978 he was awarded the Munich City Prize for Fine Arts and in 1980 the Water Lily Prize. He had a teaching position at the Munich Academy from 1980. In 1986 he received the Villa Romana Prize. Since 1987 he has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts , from 1990 to 1996 he was president of the New Group, and since then he has been its honorary president.
